Homemade Facial Moisturizer

It’s been a while since I did a purely practical post, so I thought I would introduce you to my latest DIY project: homemade facial (or body, if you like) moisturizer. It has no synthetic chemicals or preservatives, can be customized to your preferences, works out to be very inexpensive, absorbs nicely, and seems to work with most skin types — even mine, which breaks out if you so much as look at it the wrong way. I was originally leery about putting oil on my already oily skin, but having tried several facial oils, including My Skin and Bones|and|By Nieves| , I’ve found that they work a lot better than all the anti-oil products I tried for years. This is the poor man’s version. (If you do have the money, I totally recommend the two I already mentioned.) Here’s what you need:

Jojoba oil

. Trader Joe’s $7 for 4 oz, slightly more for organic at Whole Foods. Jojoba is a shelf-stable liquid wax that resembles human sebum (the oil produced by our skin). It absorbs quickly and does not clog pores.

A dark glass bottle

(any size between 15ml and 50ml) with a dropper lid or pump.

Skin-safe essential oils

such as lavender (anti-bacterial, mild astringent), chamomile (calming, de-puffing), geranium (balancing), rose (moisturizing). Different essential oils are supposed to be good for different things. If you don’t want to bother looking into it, just pick one or two of your favorites. Be cautious with the citrus oils, which are mildly phototoxic, and don’t go near the ‘fragrance’ oils, which may not be skin safe and can contain all sorts of synthetic chemicals. If you’re re-using the glass bottle, sterilize it, the lid, and the dropper in boiling water for several minutes. After everything has dried and cooled, add about 1 drop essential oil for every 3-4 ml that your bottle holds, e.g. no more than 5 drops of essential oil for a 15ml bottle. If you have very sensitive skin or are trying a new essential oil, add less. You can customize it to your favorite essential oil or create your own special blend. Fill up the rest of the bottle with jojoba and shake. Allow it to sit for a few hours. When you’re ready to use your new moisturizer, massage 2-3 drops on damp, clean skin. It will absorb quickly with little or no greasiness. I prefer to make small batches to keep any chance of contamination down, but since there is no water in this moisturizer, it’s unlikely to spoil and doesn’t need a preservative. Microbes love water, not oil. Total investment for about a year’s supply: about $15-$20, depending on the essential oils you use. Sounds good to me. Source

How to Relieve Itchy Scalp



Keep Scalp Moisturized Like your skin, your scalp also needs to be moisturized or it will become dry and itchy. For some, the scalp is well-balanced and produces natural oils that relieve the scalp of itching and dandruff; However regular exposure to sulfate shampoos, chemicals, styling products, and dry environments, will strip the scalp of it's oils causing that annoying itch! Try natural moisturizers like Jojoba oil or Shea Butter. Also be sure to use moisturizing shampoos (preferably sulfate free), and rinse the conditioners clean from you scalp after conditioning.


Wash Hair Properly Once you find a ph balanced, moisturizing or anti-dandruff formula shampoo, be sure to wash no more than 3x's per week. Simply (co-wash)conditioner wash with an inexpensive conditioner if your hair feels dirty in between washes. Minimizing washes will ensure that the scalp stays lubricated. Also use warm to cool water when wetting hair/scalp to lessen the drying affect.


Massage Your Scalp The massages will promote blood flow to the scalp, hair growth, and will alleviate itching. Use the balls of your fingertips in a circular motion with firm pressure and upward strokes. Avoid scratching or using your nails which can create scalp sores.


Eat Healthy & Drinks Lots Of Water! Our diet is reflected in our skin, hair, and scalp. Consume foods with essential omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins. Some examples of healthy scalp foods are salmon, flaxseed, nuts, eggs, dark green veggies, avocado, carrots, sweet potatoes, and whole grains.


Try Essential Oils Tingly, antiseptic, and itch relieving! Tea tree oil and Peppermint oil are great natural oils that stimulate hair growth, a healthier scalp, and relieves itchiness. Hi everyone, Makeup remover doesn’t have to be expensive or come with a label. In fact, I actually prefer this gentle version that you can make at home on the cheap. It’s non-irritating, easy to make, inexpensive and highly effective.

on how to make this perfect makeup remover, but here is a step-by-step guide to have on hand when you try it out for yourself :) All you need to create your very own makeup remover is: Extra Virgin Olive Oil Aloe Vera Water (most drugstores, heath or grocery stores will carry aloe vera water. If you can’t find it, though, filtered water will work just fine!) A re-sealable bottle (you’ll need to shake up your mixture in this) A few gentle cotton pads (for application) A few Beauty School notes before we begin: Aloe Vera water comes from the Aloe Vera plant, which is used in herbal medicine for its soothing abilities. It is a cooling agent that helps calm the skin and it contains a plethora of amino acids and vitamins. Since it’s made up of 95% water, you can be sure that it is extraordinarily hydrating and refreshing for your face. Do not be afraid of the olive oil! If the idea of putting olive oil on your face has you uneasy, relax; extra virgin olive oil actually closely resembles your skin’s natural oil production, which means that it won’t clog your pores or dry your skin out, but rather will keep it extra soft and clear it of any impurities. * * *

A Step-by-Step Guide to DIY Makeup Remover STEP 1: Pour less than ½ cup of EVOO into a bottle of aloe vera water (make sure the container has a sealable cap for Step 2 to work). A little goes a long way with EVOO because it’s highly potent, so you’ll only need a small amount. STEP 2: You’ll notice that the oil will float above the water. This is because oil is hydrophobic, which literally means “water-fearing.” So before applying, you’ll need to really shake the mixture up and use it right away before the oil and water separate again. STEP 3: After thoroughly shaking the mixture, soak one of your cotton pads with it and gently press it over one of your eyes.

Keep it here for a few seconds it works to break down all the makeup, and then gently sweep it away from your eye towards your ear.

STEP 4: Repeat Step 3 until your eyes are completely clean, and then continue the same process all over your face.

This mixture should not even feel super greasy to begin with, so remember; don’t be afraid of putting the oil on your skin. The aloe vera water will refresh and cool your skin while the oil breaks down the pigments in your makeup – a perfect combination! All clean! This makeup remover is incredibly light and clean, yet powerful enough to remove any stubborn waterproof makeup. This would also be a great formula to try if you have any allergies or sensitivities to chemicals, or just sensitive skin in general. Coconut Cream Pie Smoothie

When in Rome, do as the Romans. When in the Caribbean, consume as much coconut and as many cold creamy beverages made using coconut as possible. I really liked the Cinnamon Raisin Bread Smoothies using graham crackers blended into them, figured what the heck, let’s try it again. This time, graham crackers are the ‘pie crust’ of a coconut cream pie. A stretch? Maybe a little but not really. I happen to love coconut cream pie and wanted to recreate it without turning on my oven. Baking pie crusts and pies and messing with meringue is not something to do on vacation. With this smoothie I focused on the natural wonderfulness of coconut and coconut milk and the smoothie turned out so creamy and rich and it’s vegan. There’s a time and place for Creamy Cookie Butter White Chocolate Banana Smoothies and Chocolate Cake Batter Milkshakes, but feeling like you just drank your dessert and 789 calories in 3.7 seconds is fun of course, but not something you’d probably want to make a habit of for breakfast or for an afternoon pick-me-up. And in Aruba, I have a tendency to chug-a-lug at warp speed and try not to drink my desserts on a daily basis because I’d rather eat them. Malibu Rum Fruit Loops Treats anyone? It’s just a wee bit toasty here in August, or really, any month of the year. Aruba is just north of the Equator so it’s really not much hotter in August than it is in December and staying hydrated, preferably with lots of coconut beverages, is key. This smoothie hit the spot after a day at the beach. There was a bit of texture retained from the graham crackers and coconut flakes blended in and the bananas added perfect creaminess, and I loved every coconutty second while I was guzzling. And convinced myself, without much effort, that I was indeed drinking a coconut cream pie.

Coconut Cream Pie Smoothie RECIPE

(vegan and gluten free, as indicated below*) Makes about 12 ounces 2 ripe small/medium bananas (previously frozen in chunks is preferred) 1 standard full-size graham cracker 1/2 to 2/3 cup coconut milk (or cream or milk) 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut flakes 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, optional and to taste 1/2 teaspoon coconut or vanilla extract --> Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Garnish with a sprinkle of coconut or graham cracker crumbs. Serve immediately. Optional add-ins: 1/4 cup white chocolate or chocolate chips, 1 to 2 ounces rum or Malibu, replace the coconut milk with coffee for a coffee-coconut cream pie smoothie, 1 scoop protein powder, dollop of nut butter, add 1 scoop of ice cream for a milkshake, garnish with whipped topping or whipped cream *To keep vegan, use vegan graham crackers (Nabisco Honey Maid Original Graham Crackers are ‘accidentally vegan’) and vegan milk (coconut, cashew, almond, soy, rice). DIY Tea Tree Oil Face Wash

It’s great in many ways, removes all the dirt, freshens and revives your skin, keeps it clean and clear. It contains lots of oil and therefore removes make up very well. Aloe Vera gel will feel smooth and cool on your face and a faint scent of Tea Tree Essential Oil not only protects your face skin form bacteria, but calms and soothes it down. I found this great face wash in lovely Emma’s blog , and because she is an aromatherapist, I knew she will have something like this! Clear Skin Facial Wash 20ml aloe vera gel 10ml extra virgin olive oil 30 drops tea tree Directions: Whisk the aloe vera and olive oil a bowl until a white gel is produced. Add the tea tree oil and whisk again. This should make 2–3 applications of a facial wash. I didn’t have the aloe gel handy, so I made my own! TEA..The Benefits for hair;

Caffeine: Many teas carry caffeine, which can stimulate hair growth when used in tiny amounts. This can be a double edged sword, whereas too much can , caffeine that is, can stunt hair growth (mostly black tea). So please be sure to use the ratio 0.001% to water. Since Black Tea contain the highest amount of caffeine, take extra precaution when using these as tea rinses. Shine: Tea rinses can add shine to your hair Breakage: Decreases hair breakage due to it's strengthening effects and it blocks DHT from causing the hair to break. Hair Loss: Green Tea is wonderful for combating hair loss due to it containing EGCG. The Saitama study reports that green tea inhibits the production of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), a molecule that has been linked to cancer, arthritis and hair loss. In the Seoul study, hair follicles were treated with EGCG in a lab setting. Test cultures showed increased hair growth and hair follicle elongation when compared to control cultures. A green tea tincture containing 10 percent EGCG was also applied to the scalps of human volunteers, yielding the same results. Scalp Issues: Green Tea has been known to soothe and reduce inflammation in issues of dandruff and psoriasis affected scalps. (When looking for shampoos or conditioners containing Green Tea, be sure that the tea is in the top part of the ingredients and are free of sulfates, parabens and other harsh ingredients that will continue to irritate the scalp). Steeping fresh Rosemary has also been known to stimulate the scalp, prevent hair loss and help to regrow hair. Nettle will also help prevent and treat dandruff and stimulate circulation in the scalp. Brew a cup of herbal tea. Cool the tea down to lukewarm temperature. Apply the tea using either a color applicator bottle, to the scalp or using a spray bottle and leave on anywhere from 5-30 minutes, each persons results will vary so there is no direct way to tell how long to leave on. Massage scalp. Shampoo or Co-Wash as usual. You can also leave your tea rinse in after you have shampooed or co-washed your hair. TEA RINSES..A Word of Caution Those who have light colored hair should take precaution when using dark teas, as they can stain the hair. Black Tea contain the highest amount of caffeine, so take precaution when using.

It’s that time of year. Where you need all the exfoliation you can get! Everyone wants fabulous beach-ready skin! And lets be real, if you’re anything like me… exfoliating just didn’t seam important when you’re all covered up in winter clothing. Well, now it’s time to peel of those layers of clothing AND skin! Here is a fantastic recipe and I just know you will have all the ingredients in your kitchen. What you will need: 1 cup sea salt 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or olive, almond or coconut oil) 1/2 tsp lemon juice (or zest) 1/2 tsp orange zest (not necessary) MIX: First mix the oil and sea salt together. This is about shedding some light on natural products and products that appear to be 'O'Natural. I have been doing some research on ingredients to find out the real truth about them so that I can furthur know what I am putting on my hair, on my skin which in turn can travel throughout my body. Hmmm, so why is this necessarily important.. well, glad you asked, since the CDC is out of control with new cases of cancer and health related issues, many of the chemicals that are found in beauty products are not necessarily regulated so they are not monitored as closely as other things, such as food and medicine. And facts have shown that many of the harsh chemicals found in shampoos, conditioners, stylers and skin care products have been linked to asthma, cancer, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff and so on. Fortunately, there is a very simple way to differentiate between the hype and the truth in skin care and that is to read the ingredient list on the label. It's a legal requirement that all skin care products, natural or otherwise, must be labelled with the ingredients in descending order of their quantity in the product. A good rule of thumb is to divide the ingredient list into thirds: the top third usually contains 90-95% of the product, the middle third usually contains 5-8% and the bottom third, 1-3%. So, because I find it extremely important, I felt it extremely important to equip each one of you with the same knowledge.. so here goes!!

And many times, this is to make the product look good. #17 Is otherwise known as caustic soda or lye - a powerful drain cleaner extremely alkaline and corrosive. A known sensitizer for many people with sensitive skin. #18 Sorbic acid was once isolated from the Mountain Ash berry, but is now chemically synthesised and is a toxic preservative. No longer natural! #19 is synthetic Vitamin E #20-22 are toxic and allergenic preservatives which have been linked to increasing oestrogen levels in women and is implicated in the rising incidence of breast cancer. #23 Probably synthetic, may contain phthalates that have been linked to birth defects. Phthalates are toxic gender bending chemicals found in virtually everyone tested for them. It is certainly not natural to have phthalates in your body or on your skin I can assure you. It’s Hot! Cool Down with this Watermelon Granita

As the temperature rises, you’ll need something to help you beat that heat. Try making this watermelon granita! What’s a granita you may ask? It’s just a fancy word for a yummy, fruitastic slushy! Ingredients: -½ watermelon, rind removed and cut into 2 inch cubes -3 Tbsp. sugar -3 Tbsp. water


1. Using a food processor or blender, puree the watermelon cubes. You may have to do it in batches. One half of a watermelon should yield about 5 cups of puree.

2.Make a simple syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring the mixture to a boil. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved. Remove the syrup from the heat.

3.Mix the puree and syrup together. 4.Strain the mixture and then pour it into a large, shallow pan (13 x 9 x 2.) Make sure that the granita is no more than 1-inch thick, or else it will take FOREVER to freeze. Put the pan in the freezer for one hour. 5. After an hour, remove the pan from the freezer. Using a fork, scrape the granita from the bottom and sides of the pan. Put it back into the freezer. 6. Every hour, remove the pan from the freezer and rake the ice crystals until the granita is frozen through and there is no more liquid. 7. Serve it up! It’s super pretty, so use a clear glass.

Topically, virgin coconut oil helps wounds heal and gives collagen a boost as well, which provides support for the underlying structure of your skin. Findings of studies echo the traditional wisdom of using coconut oil for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Coconut oil lathers easily, so it’s often found in cleansing products. You can also use it by itself to gently remove all traces of your makeup, including waterproof mascara. Known as the tree of life by the natives of Morocco, the argan tree has been providing culinary and topical health benefits for more than eight centuries. Long revered for its cardio-protective properties, argan oil is also widely used to treat skin infections. Composed of up to 80% monounsaturated fats and up to 20% saturated fats, this nut oil also contains polyphenols, sterols, squalene, and tocopherols (vitamin E). In fact, argan contains more gamma-tocopherol than any other oil. As a result, argan oil is very healing for dry skin and broken skin. It is also useful for reducing the greasiness and improving the appearance of oily skin. This oil is very rich and very expensive, so it’s used in small amounts in formulations. Use straight oil sparingly.


This nonfragrant emollient liquid wax is an ideal lubricantand noncomedogenic moisturizer (won’t clog pores) partially because it resists rancidity better than other oils. This oil also more closely resembles human sebum (oil) than any other plant oil, and helps to balance sebum production in oilier skins. While jojoba oil is great for oily skin, it’s also extremely nourishing for dry skin. Jojoba has also been used for its natural antifungal activity, against such unpleasantries as athlete’s foot and other fungal infections. Research also shows that jojoba oil inhibits the breakdown of collagen after sun exposure, which is a major cause of skin aging.


Rich in nutrient waxes, proteins, and minerals as well as vitamins A, D, and E, anti-inflammatory avocado is the perfect nutrition for dry and damaged skin, eczema, psoriasis, and sunburn. This heavy fruit oil penetrates deeply into the skin, and research shows that avocado is beneficial for wound healing.


Long used in Ayurvedic medicine for its soothing properties, sesame oil is high in vitamin E to nourish and rejuvenate skin and is resistant to rancidity. Studies show that sesame oil enhances tocotrienol levels in adipose (fat) tissue and skin, leading to improved antioxidant status. Unfortunately, sesame allergy is becoming increasingly eommon, involving both anaphylaxis and eontact dermatitis. If you are allergic to sesame seeds, you may be wise to avoid the use of sesame oil.


“Olive oil contains squalene, which is useful as an emollient and antioxidant to protect skin.” Unlike other oils extracted from a nut or seed, olive oil is extracted from the olive fruit. Virgin and extra-virgin olive oils are produeed through meehanieal extraetion only, then filtered. Olive oil is inexpensive eompared to some of the other oils, and is a source of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, vitamin E, and squalene. Squalene helps regulate sebum (oil that acts as a barrier, inhibiting the growth of bacteria on skin) production. Squalene is also useful as an emollient and antioxidant to protect skin. Use olive oil directly on your face, and massage into body skin. It also makes an excellent hot oil treatment for hair: simply apply a small amount to hair, cover head with a shower cap, and wrap in a towel. After 20 minutes, shampoo as usual.

Now some common facts about hair growth are: hair grows at a rate of 1/4 to 1/2 inch each month, diet and water intake, proper moisturizer ion, trimming cleansing routines, as well as mechanical maintenance play major roles in achieving awesome results. Now, keep in mind, we see ourselves daily so it's sometimes difficult to always 'see' our growth, which is why a picture journal is helpful. Ok, now that that's out of the way, check out these tips for achieving and maintaining healthy hair growth.


(1)Knots and Breakage:

For those who receive single strand knots And breakage, most of it is due to combing/brushing methods and improper moisturization and protection. These are primary culprits of not seeing or achieving maximum healthy hair growth.


When you have kinky,coily or hard to detangle hair, like me, it is a must to use a conditioner to detangle the hair. Detangling with a conditioner with great slip is key to avoiding snags, pull and/or breakage. Here's what has worked for me. Before I cleanse, I add loads of conditioner (of course, my Natty Moist conditioner) throughout my hair as a pre poo, then finger detangle first. Using fingers first allows you to feel for knots that combs do not seem to catch. Then, I use a wide tooth comb to comb the conditioner through and complete detangling. To avoid re tangling, I put the detangled sections into twists, rinse, cleanse, deep condition all while my hair are still in twists? I have learned that denmAn brushes are culprits for breakage and snagging, so I opt for a wide tooth comb. A tip I learned from Nicole Hollis of Hair Liberty is, when testing the roughness of a comb or brush, lightly drag the teeth across your arm and if it leaves a scratch mark, the tool is too Sharp.


Remember a healthy scalp is key to healthy hair. Co-washing is an awesome method for lightly cleansing the hair and helping to retain some moisture. BUT, co-washing cannot be the end all be all for cleansing due to buildup. Conditioners have ingredients that naturally create buildup after awhile and combine that with your others products; oils, butters, serums, gels and you're asking for some trouble if you do not remove these items so the scalp can thrive. Basic shampoos, many times, do not have the strength to remove the oils, butters and cones, OH MY! So, a great clarifying cleanse is great to use monthly, use bi-weekly if you use products with silicones and other harsh ingredients. Always follow up with a great condition after cleansing.


oooobbber important. First, let's talk about what a 'moisturzer' is. In order for a product to be considered a moisturizer it must contain WATER. Butters, oils and other emollients are not considered moisturizers. Now, here's a great tip to properly moisturizing the hair. First, apply water or a water based product to the hair, THEN, apply a butter or oil to seal/lock in the moisture. Now, in between your cleansing routine or throughout the week, this practice should be repeated as often as needed. For my kinky coily hair, I find I must moisturizer once to twice per week (everyone varies). Dead ends are also a culprit to dry hair. e sure to trim the hair as often as needed. For me, I can tell when it's time when I continuously try to hydrate my ends and they still feel dry and make that scratchy rough sound. One last tip that helps in the moisturizing department is the use of an old t-shirt instead of a towel when drying the hair. Towels are rough on the hair and cause friction which leads to frizz and breakage.


due to the everyday hustle and bustle, pulling and pushing, twisting and tugging, our hair takes a beating. It's a great idea to strengthen the hair at least once per month. Henna, amal and other special treatments are great for this. Protein treatments are also extremely helpful in strengthening the hair. Especially if you tend to have color, use heat or have highly porous hair. Products that contain hydrolized 'silk or oat' proteins are good for giving desired results, but proceed with caution as they do contain MSG. ingredients,such as those proteins are small enough to penetrate the hair shaft. Do it yourself proteins, such as ; egg, mayo or coconut milk are large proteins that have very slight capabilities of penetrating the hair shaft, but I've had awesome results using coconut milk as a protein treatment. I absolutely love Ayurvedic and other beneficial healing and strengthening herbs that put the coat of armor on around our hair. In all of my hair products, I incorporate Ayurvedic and healing herbs that help to put the 'muscle' back into the hair. Of course, anytime you do any strengthening treatment such as; henna, amla, cassia, etc, be sure to follow up with a 'deep conditioner'.


Wearing the hair in protective styles most of the is extremely beneficial. Styles such as plaits, braids, twists or when hair is tucked away in low manipulation/tension buns are awesome for achieving and maintaining length. My hair, 4-5 days out of the week is usually in twists and/or tucked away. Another very important protective measure is to lightly moisturizer the hair and tuck away in a satin scarf or bonnet. Cotton head gear pulls moisture from the hair, so be sure if you opt to sleep scarf or cap free, adorn your pillow with a satin case. Also, because our ends are the oldest part of the hair, they need a little more attention in regards to moisture, sealing and protecting. An awesome tip I learned from Cipraha of Urban Bush Babes was as follows: (1)mist ends with distiller or filtered water (2)soak up the access water with a paper towel (3)apply a heavy butter or oil to the ends. This tip has worked wonders for my ends. :)

If you flat iron your hair for length check-ups, your hair seems to hit your shoulders. But, once your hair is wet again, you may find your hair looks like you are back in the TWA stage. Our curls are often tightly coiled and can shrink up to 75 percent of our actual length. Shrinkage is always going to happen with curly hair whether it’s loose or tight. When your natural hair gets near your shoulders, you will not notice shrinkage as much. With shorter to neck length hair, you will experience it when your hair is damp. Ladies, here are a few ways to stretch your natural tresses and retain length: Banding Banding is when you use rubber bands or elastic hair bands to stretch out the curls in natural hair. You should comb out a sectioned piece of hair, and then place a hair band around it to make a small pony tail. Each section is banded a few more times to secure in place until the whole head is banded. Twisting Twisting is a great way to stretch your hair. You divide your wet hair into sections and then part it into two strands. Simply twist the strands together. Twists help to stretch out your roots. Thicker twist stretch out the length of the hair. To stretch your curls even further, you can re-twist your hair every five to seven days.

Braiding Just like twisting, braiding can effectively stretch your hair. You work with three strands of hair instead of two strands of hair and tightly wound into braids. Braiding can be done on damp or dry hair. Bantu Knots Bantu knots are created by making a square shaped part and the roots are held while the remaining length of wet hair is wrapped around it. Once the hair is dry, the knots are taken down for heatless stretching. Heat We know many naturals do not like to explore heat, but lightly blow drying your hair is an option for stretching your hair. Lightly blow dry on low warm heat and use a heat protectant. Tools like hot combs, flat iron, and blow dryers are used to get the hair straight and loosen up the curl.
